Social media is a means of communication via which people share information, usually on an electronic platform. According to Rouse, M(2013) Social media refers to the collective of online channels of community-based input content-sharing and interaction”. Social media encompasses a collection of social sites which includes but not limited to facebook, twitter, whatsApp, skype, Reddit and a chain of many others. The majority of the users of these social media sites are youths. Let’s therefore look at the influences of the social media on youths. Social media has both positive and negative influences on the youths. It’s important to note that due to the high increase in the use and acceptability of social media it is fast being adopted as an official channel of communication especially in the business world. Focusing fast on the positive influences on the youth. Through increased use of social media across the divide of age groups it has created employment for the youths. Digital marketing is the main kind of job that has been availed to youths via use of social media. Youths are highly being hired by companies so that they market the companies’ products on the social media; where there is a populace of potential buyers at any given time. It is important to even note that; some of the youths are even owning a store-less businesses where they just need a small amount of capital to buy the merchandise and then they market their products on the social media; without having to rent a premises. The youths remains informed. Due to the viral nature of the information shared on social; media youths on social media keep updated on the news in their surrounding and across the globe. This has the advantage of enabling the youths; identify the would-be business opportunities from across the world. Social media has enhanced interactions by the youths across the countries races tribes and; economic status. In fact through social media sites it has become easier for people to relate virtually. It has also allowed for people to easily spur relationships some; of which end at marriage. As alluded; above social media has its dark side too.; It has highly led to erosion of the moral behavior of the some of the youths. Some of the social media sites share sexual explicit material that end up influencing the youths negatively. Some of the young people become addicted to phonographic material which they easily access through some of the social media sites- this way their moral integrity is fast deteriorated. Another of the; drawbacks of the increased use of social media amongst the youths is negative economic impact. When youths become addicted to the use of social media sites all which depend on the internet such youth ends up wasting most of their income on paying for the service; of internet. This highly and negatively-so discourages savings and in essence without savings the chances of such youths investing are also highly reduced. It’s worth-noting that most of the incomes held and spent by the majority unemployed youths comes from their guardians and if such youths wasted it on social media in essence it’s their guardian’s income that is wasted. From the foregoing it’s apparently clear that the use of social; media amongst the youth comes with both positive and negative influences to them and hence the youths should be wise in using it.;
