Paper on ‘To His Coy Mistress’:
To His Coy Mistress is the poem composed by the famous English politician and poet Andrew Marvell approximately in 1650s, though there are suppositions that the poem was written in 1660s.
This metaphysic poem is written in iambic tetrameter and covers only three verses. The poem is about the narrator’s attempts to win attention of the young woman who refuses to respond to his affection. At first he claims that he is able to wait for her favour as much as it is needed, because he is patient and the woman is worth waiting for. Then the narrator says that the life is short and it is impossible to wait long for the woman, because the human being should live in the current moment.
Here it is possible to see the famous Latin aphorism “Carpe diem”, which means “seize the day”.
The speaker says that it is important to solve problems at once and to use every opportunity when it is possible. In the end the speaker says that the woman should requite the man’s efforts, because he has taken many efforts and is worth her attention. To His Coy Mistress is the poem which is closely connected with love poetry and at the same time the poem is full of deep metaphysical ideas.
Andrew Marvell used a great number of complicated metaphors and allusions to other works of the outstanding English authors. Evidently, the poem was treated as a simple irony concerning the human sexuality, while other critics emphasize deep thoughts a solemn atmosphere and mood in the text.
