Personal Statement – Term Paper

Philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau once said that “plants are shaped by cultivation and men by education.” My career goal is to become an accomplished financial adviser. As such, I have put myself through a rigorous educational journey to ensure that I achieve my goals. My passion for education owes its genesis to the direction taken by my family. It was inevitable I became the person I am today coming from a home with disciplined parents motivated by success. My interest in finance comes from my childhood and watching/learning from my father who has been a banker for more than 20 years. Since my early life as a child, I have always been inspired by the commitment and accomplishments of my parents. Besides my father, who is a banker, my mother owns a fashion company. Her disciplined approach towards business matters and straight talk has over time influenced my life-important decisions, especially in educational matters. 

My close relationship to my father made me develop an interest in math and economics while I was still in middle school. Since then, my path has always been determined by doing things I love. I attended honor calculus courses in high school and later in university. Later, my road towards financial management took shape while at Rutgers University, where I majored in mathematical finance and even turned my education into a hobby by joining a math club. To reinforce the concepts I learned from middle school all the way to university, I secured several work experiences. In the summer of 2012, I worked as an accountant at Ming Rui Limited. At this position, my duty was to document the company’s financial transactions. All summers from 2013 to 2015, I have served as a financial adviser assistant at China Merchants Bank. As an advisor, my duty was to research emerging market issues and recommending them to my seniors. Thus, my decision to pursue a financial management degree is influenced by my strong family and educational background, and the unwavering personal commitment in accomplishing my aspirations.
