Ethics and Social Justice – Term Paper

Ethics and Social Justice

Many countries, more so the developed ones grapple with issues of immigration, particularly illegal immigration. Apart from putting pressure on the resources of the host countries, it may result in increased rates of crime and terrorism, especially in this age of radicalization and global terrorism. Immigration, thus, qualifies as an issue of social injustice facing our nation today.

Life would be difficult as an immigrant. Apart from the xenophobia that most of them face, it may be difficult to find a decent shelter and a place to earn a living. Some theologians contend that all humans immigrants on this earth, further adding that their commitment is to God and his kingdom. In this light, they consider themselves as heavens citizens first. They further contend that immigrants best understand this as they are outside their countries. Therefore, other individuals have the responsibility to love immigrants and advocate for justice and equality (Roberts). According to science, immigration is important. Contrary to popular opinion, immigration has been found out to have a positive impact on the economy, life and culture of the host nation. In fact, immigrants are typically used as scapegoats for the real problems facing a country (Burnett). The theological and scientific perspectives might try to get information such as opinions of the immigrants, and other socio-economic indicators of the impact that they have on the host country. Using this information, they would correctly assess the real effect of immigration.

In conclusion, the issue of immigration seems to be majorly informed by wrong and malicious facts. From the theological and scientific perspective, the public needs to be reeducated and handed the right information. However, safeguards need to be put in place to ensure that immigration reforms take into account the risks that accrue from it.
