Reflective practice research paper – Term Paper

Importance of reflection

Reflection is an important skill that requires people be reflective in their process of learning or undertaking activities. Nursing students are expected to engage in a thoughtful learning process throughout their programs (Wilding, 2008). Learning from experience and practice is integral to reflective learning. Gibbs reflective practice is a model for reflective learning and arguably the best.

Gibbs model proposes that theory and practice are complementary and it happens in unending cycles (Finlay, 2008). It has been adopted in the nursing field to facilitate reflection among the scholars. The cycle is made of six steps which include; description of what happened, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion, and action plan.

Description of what occurred during the experience is the first and them focusing on the thoughts and feelings that were associated with the experience. The third step is an evaluation of the merits and demerit of the experience (Finlay, 2008). The fourth step is the analysis of the situation to find sense in it as either necessary or worthless to the practice. The fifth step is the conclusion which focuses on alternative mode action, and the last is the action plan where a person has to consider how better to confront the same situation in future.

Gibbs reflective model

Gibbs reflective model is the best since a situation has to be confronted by a series of steps which are interrelated. It makes it easy to consider and learn from each situation. It ensures a person takes a better mode of action for future and similar situation, and for this reason, I consider Gibbs model progressive. The model allows the scholars to be innovative since for each situation an individual is expected to take the best mode of action.

In conclusions Gibbs reflective model is applied in a cyclic manner has six steps which include; description of what happened, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion, and action plan. For this reason, Gibbs reflective practice is a model for reflective learning and arguably the best.
