Plagiarism in higher education

a)How serious an offense to academic integrity is plagiarism?

1.Non-moral  values: education, knowledge, grades

2.Moral values: dishonesty, peer influence

3.It is not serious because it may symbolize good research but poor restatement of information

Might lead to harsh punishment as a result of slight error in summary

4.YES – it is an indication that the submitted work is a fraud since it is someone else ideas that have been passed as own. 

Defeats the whole purpose of education since it is meant to pass knowledge and ensure that students can make their own independent research on what they have learnt. 

5.YOUR POLICY

To some extent, plagiarism is a serious offense to academic integrity as it shows unoriginal work has been done. It might also lead to peer influence among other students to do the same if plagiarism is not taken seriously. It is a compromise of the whole point of the education system.

b)Should children’s TV watching be limited?

1.Non-moral  values: information, safety, efficiency

2.Moral Values: explicit videos, misguided concepts, development

3.NO – Television can be educative and a source of valuable information

-Children have a right to entertainment

4.YES – it might negatively affect the development of their brain and reasoning abilities.

5.It might also lead to laziness of the children

6.YOUR POLICY

Children’s Television watching should be limited. This is because leaving them to watch anything and everything might lead them to watch some explicit videos which might harm their mental development. The number of hours that a child should be allowed to watch TV need to depend on the age of the child. For instance a kid under age of 2 should only be allowed to watch TV for not more than 2 hrs. There is also need for parents to advocate for time to educational programs. 

c)Is driving a right or a privilege? (Should we expect more drive responsibility than we currently do?)

1.Non-moral  values: skill, driving

2.Moral Values: responsibility, choices

3.NO – it is not a right as one has to learn the skill

-It also requires government approval through a license

4.YES – it is a privilege because it can easily be taken away if abused

5.Not everyone is allowed to drive

6.YOUR POLICY

Drivers need to be responsible when driving and need not to drive when drunk. Penalties should be invoked on drivers who drive when they are drunk. Licenses for drivers found drunk while drunk need to be revoked for a period not less than three months.
